For those of you thinking about painting your home or business, there’s no time like the present! Here’s some helpful hints from someone who has made commercial and residential painting his business over the last 25 years.

Make sure you give yourself enough time, especially if you’re not a professional. Stress causes mistakes. Don’t wait till the in-laws are visiting; if anything, wait until after they’re gone to do the painting and give yourself ample time.

If you plan to paint ceilings, start with the ceilings first. You’ll drip all over the walls, so just go ahead and take care of the ceilings first.

It should go without saying, but make sure you paint a patch of your wall with the color you’re thinking of first, then check it out during various times of the day to see how it looks in sunlight, in lamplight, etc. In fact, if you think you’re having trouble deciding between different colors, paint a wall in all the various shades! What do you care if it looks messy? You’ll be painting over it in a couple of days (or weeks – but hopefully not months).

When buying paint, if the colors are custom – in other words, if they’re not the standards offered straight out of the factory – make sure you get more than you need to do the job. If the paint has to be custom-mixed, even a minute variation can drastically affect a new batch of paint. And you don’t want to have to paint half the room over again because your new blue doesn’t look quite as blue as the wall right next to it.

Feel free to mix and match colors, with accent walls that are different shades – but again, make sure to test out the walls and make sure that the colors not only go together well, but that they look the way you’ve envisioned them in your head. Tiny paint swatches under fluorescent lights look vastly different from a wall of paint in sunlight.

Rollers are one of the best inventions for painters ever. Use them. And the most efficient way to do it is to paint two or three-square-foot areas at once. Use a continuous M or W pattern – don’t go up and down, up and down, then move over a foot and go up and down, up and down. If you do the W or M pattern and do strokes at an angle, you can apply the paint more evenly overall. Fill in any light spots with the up-and-down strokes.

Plus, start your first stroke using a roller by going UP the wall with it. If you roll down on the first stroke, the paint has a tendency to run down the wall. Be careful not to run the roller so fast that it causes droplets of paint to spray out. Use a nice, steady, even stroke. (Remember – allot yourself a nice chunk of time so you’re not under time constraints and stress!)

Make sure the room is fairly well-ventilated – you don’t need to be passing out from fumes. Open doors are good, though not necessarily open windows unless you have really good screens over them.

There is a section above the roof and you have no idea how to set a ladder up there so you can reach everything because the roof is pitched. you decide to quit and just hire somebody professional. You can lower the pick as you move down the house. They make picks that can be cranked up and down as well, these set up different and do not use ladders. Getting a friend to help you set it up would be nice but it can be done by yourself.

Remember that area above the roof you cannot get to because the pitch on the roof is making it impossible to set a ladder up there. There are some tools that can help with this and you must decide ahead of time just how you will approach this situation. It all depends upon the height above the roof you need to get to that will determine just how you will do it. They make an angled step that has rubber grips usually for stairs, however this can be used for our purpose on the roof. What you need is a chicken ladder that will hook over the ridge of the roof then set the step in the rung so it is stable. You can now run a ladder up there and it will be level. I would suggest having a spotter. You may also be able to run a pick from the ridge of the roof over to a ladder if there is a nook to where you can set up a ladder. Just think about the situation and plan ahead and ask questions. Now that you have all of the logistics figured out off to step 2.

Set out a plan on paper of what you will want to achieve for each weekend and take each section of the house as a part to complete before moving on, with exception of the pressure washing, get all of that done first. Say for the front of the house you would like to complete on two weekends, with the first weekend being scraping sanding, spot priming any bare areas and caulking. Then the second weekend get it painted. Making a plan and keeping organized will take a lot of frustration away and you will feel like you are getting something done. It really is that simple!
